Match Report 6:India vs Australia

Indian opener Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were high on confidence after their 178 runs opening stand in last match and started in the same manner in this game too. They provided hundred runs opening stand and put together 112 runs in 19 overs. Dhawan was the first one who got out on 60 off 57. After that it was the flurry of wicket which also included last match hero Virat Kohli (0) too.

But that match not gone be ended just like any other game. Rohit and MS Dhoni played some fantastic shots to placed really huge target of 383 runs before Aussies. They scored 167 runs in just 94 balls for fifth wicket that gave India a seriously good chance to win the series. Rohit scored double century and became the third man to do so in one day internationals. He scored 209 runs in 158 balls with 12 fours and 16 sixes, which is more sixes by any batsman in an innings.

Rohit Sharma's innings was an epitome of how one can score big runs and can hit big shots without slogging. He kept his innings cool and hit some breathe taking shots. Though Skipper MS Dhoni innings of 62 off 38 balls wasn't the talking point after the innings but he played his part really well in that innings.

Aussie bowling without Mitchell Johnson was lacking in pace and experience. Left-arm Xavier Doherty picked up couple of wickets and was economical before the Rohit's carnage in last overs. Aussies had a huge task before them of chasing 384 runs. They might be wanted to chase it down because they had lost two high scoring games to India in this series and that win might be proved as a face saving for them.

India bowling which looked clumsy, suddenly relive and all credit for that goes to Mohammed Shami. His extra pace and early wickets gave India some momentum in bowling at start. But despite picking some early wickets India again failed to exploit the situation and gave Aussies chance to taken the match to 45th over. India bowling figures(See below):

Aussies were at 74 runs for 4 wickets after 17 overs when Glenn Maxwell came to the crease. His first 6 balls were 6 4 2 4 6 6 it shows how he started his innings inspite of Aussies trouble when he came to crease. This also showed some intent from Aussies who before that looked perplexed about how to go for that target and also put indian bowler to back foot. He made 18 balls fifty and finished on 60 off 22 balls. Watson, who came late in this match due to his hamstring problem, continued from where maxwell left. He made 49 in just 22 balls with six sixes.

But Aussies innings wasn’t ended after that. That match and series had one more century left for fans and that came from all-rounder James Faulknar, who singlehandedly fought till the end and made 116 in 73 balls. He along with Mckay put 115 runs partnership for ninth wicket. But this couldn’t save Aussies from defeat and they fell 57 runs before.

Rohit Sharma was awarded with man of the match for his double century knock in that game and also man of the series for scoring highest runs for India.

Match Report 5: India vs Australia

India beat Australia in a high scoring game by 6 wickets at Nagpur on Tuesday. It seems like that scores of excess 300 acts as a catalyst for Indian team. They just made a colossal target of 351 runs looked as a speck one again. Again because it seemed like that they repeating their performance of Jaipur where they had embarrassed Aussies when they gave a target of 360.

On toss, skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to ball first on a slow Nagpur pitch. On the basis of pitch, India played with three spinners that gave Amit Mishra his first chance in this series. Indian bowlers started in a fairly good manner and picked up couple of early wickets that left Aussies 46/2 after 12 over’s.

But after that it was all about Shane Watson, who got life when he was caught on No ball in Jadeja's overs when he was at 25 runs, and skipper George Bailey. They both made 168 runs for third wicket and successfully recovered team from what could have been a disastrous situation if Watson would have been out on 25 runs to 213 runs.

Waston was bowled by Shami Ahmed after his 102 runs knock in just 94 balls but that does not stop Bailey, who is going through the form of his life, to make his first century in this series. He made 156 off 114 with 13 fours and 6 sixes at strike rate of 136.8. It was only because of his innings that Aussies was able to reach at a score of 350 on a wicket where average first innings score was 391.

Indian bowlers yet again disappoint with their efforts in middle overs, where they weren't seemed like picking up any wicket, and in dept overs, where they weren't able to even stop runs. Spinners bowled their full quota of overs but they too failed to make any mark on a slow track against Aussies.

India had needed 351 runs to win but at this time that wasn't look as awful as it was when same team gave India a target of 360. Yes, everyone knows that replicating the same what India did in Jaipur wasn't as easy as they did in that match but at least that gave everyone a confidant that this team can do that and even Aussies might not be sure after scoring that huge target.

India must also be aware of the fact that it was only Aussies who lost matches after putting big scores on board. Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma 79 (89) provided them the much needed start which was required to chase that huge target of 351. They improved their performance from the Jaipur match where they scored 176 for opening partnership by scoring 2 more runs this time that is 178 runs.  Dhawan, particularly, played some fantastic shot in his 100 runs innings.

But when India needs 300 or more to win in ODI's how can India's innings finish before Virat Kohli's, at least that's what stats says. Today he scored his 11 century while chasing and every time his made century India win that game. In this game too, a heroic performance of Virat Kohli made it so simple of India though some wickets at the end might raised concern for India but wicket in hand helped India to safely cruising to victory.

Kohli Centuries

Kohli made 115 runs in just 61 balls with 18 fours and 1 biggie. He had won Man of the Match of his match winning innings.

Match Report 4: India vs Australia

Fourth match between India and Australia was abandoned due to Rain on Wednesday at Ranchi.

For the first time in this series Indian skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and had elected to field first. Indian made two changes in their side. They left out Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and gave Mohammad Shami and Jaydev Unadkat a chance in team.

With the changes in the bowling line up, Indian bowling state changed completely, they were fast, accurate and confidant. Particularly Mohammad Shami, who was fast and accurate. He was the star for Indian in bowling and his early wickets helped the team to a good start.

In that match, Skipper MS Dhoni also tried his most trusted part time bowler Suresh Raina. Raina was accurate and economical. All bowlers looked good and at one time it was looking that india could restrict Aussies around 250. But it was India's catching that time which let them down. They dropped 5-6 catches and that by India's some of the best fielder like Virat Kohli. Indian bowling figure was:

CvC Photos
In Aussies batting especially in opening, we saw a rare failure in this series. Opener Finch 5(10) and Hughes 11(17) fell quickly which left Aussies 24/2 after 6 overs. Watson 14(19) and Voges 7(16) too failed to built the Aussies innings and after these wickets Aussies were in deep trouble, they were at 71/4 after 14.3 overs.

And then it was all depend upon their Skipper George Bailey 98 off 94 and he didn't disappoint either. He is the most reliable batman for Aussies in this series and he proved it again. He along with the Glenn Maxwell successfully rescued Australia from 71 for 4 to 224 for 5 with 153 runs partnership. Maxwell, who was criticized for not converting his 30-40 runs starts into a big one, also showed his class and scored 92 in 77 with 6 fours and 5 biggies.

Unfortunately both fell before reaching to three figures. But Aussie tail fought and provided that last push to reach a score of 295/8. This wouldn't gone be an easy target for India, considering the kind of pace battery Aussies had.

Indian Opener came to the crease and looked comfortable when rain disrupt the play. At that time India's score was 27 for no loss. Unfortunately match was abandoned due to continuous rain and match was tied.

After the last Match it was expected that India need some changes in their bowling attack which failed in almost all games. Particularly Ishant Sharma, who was the most expensive among Indian bowlers. His last Four matches figure was 0/52, 1/56, 0/70 and 1/63 that include T20 also.

But selector and Skipper MS Dhoni showed their faith in his bowling and retain him in the squad.

Match Report 3: India vs Australia

Australia beat India by 4 wickets at Mohali on Saturday. Australia chased down the target of 304 in the last over. Adam Voges and James Faulknar partnership helped Aussies to cross the line after the loss of 6 of their main batsmen.

Australia won the toss again and Captain George Bailey decided to Bowl first this time. The only way, they can try now after India's chase in 2nd Match. Opener Rohit Sharma 11(22) and Shikhar Dhawan 8(6), after their match winning partnership of 176 in 2nd Match, failed to replicate that performance in that game.

Virat Kohli 68(73) tried to provide some assistance but the regular fell of wickets on other side made so difficult for Indian's to go beyond 200, as it was appeared at that time. Raina(17), Yuvraj (0) and Jadeja (2) all fell cheaply. It was the irony of life that the top order who made the massive target of 360 appeared like a speck one, were left India 76/4 in 13 overs.

It was Skipper MS Dhoni, who came to the salvage of team. he made 72 runs for 5th wicket with Kohli and 76 runs for 7th wicket with Ashwin and it was because of MS Dhoni's, sensible and aggressive game play that India was able to achieved a total of 303 after 50 overs. He made unbeaten 139 off 121 balls with 12 fours and 5 sixes. With that Dhoni became the first Indian skipper who score century at Mohali.

Australian bowlers proved that this Indian batting still have some shortcomings before short balls.  Particularly, M Johnson,  the most experience among Aussie bowling line up, was outstanding for them. His bowling figure was 10-1-46-4. X Doherty was the another admirable bowler for Aussies, even though he was unable to take any wicket but his bowling was economical.

A target of 304 was not the stiff one for Aussies.Their Openers Aaron Finch 38(44) and Philips Hughes 22(40) provided them the good platform of 68 runs in 12.2 overs. Watson (11) and Finch wickets fell in good time but then came the Aussies most reliable and trusted player in this year, George Bailey 43(60), who made 83 runs for 4th wicket with Adam Voges.

Bailey wicket left Australia at 171/4 in 36.2 overs at that point Aussies were at a strong position in the game but with the wickets of Maxwell at 174 runs at 37th over and Brad Haddin's at 213 runs at 42nd over, Indian's were right back in the game.

At that moment in the game it was even steven and any team could win from there. but it was Australia who rose at the occasion at won the game. Adam Voges 76*(88) and James Faulknar 64*(29) played some fantastic shot in their 91 runs partnership in just 50 balls.

Indian bowling was disappointed again particularly Ishant Sharma who gave away 30 runs in 48 over to Faulknar. After that it was the cake walk for Aussies who needed 14 runs required from 12 balls. Indian bowling chart was:

James Faulknar was chosen as the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.

Anything is possible in cricket

Anything is possible in cricket and last game between India and Australia was the epitome of this. India chased down the colossal target of 360 in 43.3 overs with 9 wickets left. With that win, India also leveled the series by 1-1.

India's batsmen again proved their capabilities against the genuine fast bowling attack of Aussies. What worse for Aussies was that they were nowhere in the second innings despite having a massive score on board. Indian batsmen were just outplayed them, they playing them with so much of ease that one might be doubting "Is that the same attack which ruffled Indian batsmen with their pace and bounce in 1st game?" .

"They came, thrashed them and went to the pavilion with their bat high" that is how one can perceived it in simple and short language or there is another way to explain that in short and that is "Shikhar Dhawan (95) set up the stage for India to chase that massive score and then R Sharma (141*) and V Kohli (100*) cruises India to a historic victory".

Match Report in case you missed.

But that was not picture perfect win for Indian if one consider their bowling. They were disastrous, whether it was fast bowlers or spinners every one failed to restrict any Aussie batsman. Yes one can argue that it was not only Indian bowler but Aussie bowlers were also thrashed by Indian batsmen and that was the same in the lone T20 also where too Indian batsmen hunted down the 200+ target.

If  Indian wants to be at a top in ICC Ranking for long period, their bowling needs to redress.

It will be interesting to see Australia approach after being bowed down by Indian after that effort. Batting wise, they are 10/10 till now in this tour but it was India's batting or their bowling which is causing worry for them.

Match will be starts from 2.30pm IST on 19 Oct at Mohli.

Stats of the Match

Indian Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Vinay Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Jaydev Unadkat, Amit Mishra, Ambati Rayudu.

Indian batting decimated Australian pace attack

"Australia had scored 359 and India now has to chase 360 to win the game" that statement created a lot of ruckus among the Indian fans before the second innings. There was a state of pessimism in the fans may be because of the last match performance of team India against Aussies at pune.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan came to the crease made 176 in 26.1 overs and after the wicket of Shikhar, Virat Kohli came to the crease and played the flashy innings of 100 off 52. which cruise india to a emphatic victory over Aussies. Isn't sound so easy?? But it was not that easy as it sound it required lots of determination and class, with aggression to chase down that Colossal target.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan

Actually it was he who laid the foundation for the chase with his breakneck play right at the start where India found difficult against mighty Australian bowling attack in first game. He used the crease well and not allowed any Aussie bowler to settle. He scored 95 off  86 with 14 fours at a Strike Rate of 110.46. On a tinge green pitch of Jaipur he had made Aussies fast bowling ineffective with his aggressive play.

Since his comeback against Australia in test matches earlier this year, he never looked back. He is going through a purple patch of his career, he scored 3 hundreds and 3 fifties in 16 matches, with a golden bat in champions trophy, a major tournament of ICC since his comeback.

"We started off very well and once we got the momentum, we just carried on. Both (Rohit and Dhawan) are doing a good job for the country. We didn't want to play rash shots early, we opened up only later. I am happy for Rohit that he got the century today, because he was playing well in the last few months."  he said after the match.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma
© BCCI
"One of the most talented and under rated cricket in Indian team, who is not playing to his potential". this was the most common line used for Rohit sharma before he was appointed as a Mumbai Indian team - his IPL team - Captain. It was change of the role for Rohit, who now had to lead his senior likes Sachin and H Singh but he rose to the occasion and made his team IPL and CLT20 champion, which concluded just before Australia series.

That confidence reflected in his batting in both the tournaments and in his series as well. He made unbeaten  141 in 123 balls with 17 balls and 4 sixes at strike rate of 114.63. He was also selected Man of the Match for his match innings.

"It was very important for me to play the big innings. It took a long time coming, but I would like to say that the hardwork never stopped. I wanted to bat throughout the innings, I agree that I have played some stupid shots to get out, but this was much needed. Both Shikhar and I understood the pitch and managed the chase, and Virat came and played a strong innings and his innings needs a mention as much as any." he said

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli
© BCCI
At Present moment, he is India's most successful batsman specially when it come to chasing big scores. In his last 10 matches where Kohli made century while chasing, India had won these matches. This is enough for suggesting his importance in India's middle order.

But in that game he did something different, he made 100 in just 52 ball with 8 fours and 7 sixes at strike rate of 192.30. which placed him right at top of the list of fastest hundred for India.

"I kept telling Rohit that it was his day today, but i kept hitting the ball very well. I didn't bat in the nets yesterday, just had a few throw downs. I wasn't worried about the short-pitched stuff, i pulled a few of them early and then they started bowling half-volleys. Rohit is the best of the young lot that we have and he is the most dangerous T20 player, so it was a privilege to watch him from the other end."  he said

Match Report: India beat Australia by 9 wickets.
